On the local economy, the handbook (data from around 2009-10) names paddy as the major crop, describes the Madurai Malli jasmine traded at the city's morning flower market, and records limestone, granite, graphite and quartz among the district's minerals. The district administration places the Chithirai festival at the Meenakshi temple in April or May, and the handbook text says the temple draws about 15,000 visitors a day, around 25,000 on Fridays.
